The thermocouple or flame sensor look very similar but work differently. This maintains gas flow to the pilot until the thermocouple gets hot enough to. If the gas main to the fireplace is on it should provide gas even if the thermocouple is bad. The pilot does light easily and stays lit, so as you suggested, that's not where the issue is.
